Physical Self Care

Recently I had a bit of a “hiccup” with my physical health. I’m ok but it definitely had me thinking about some things I didn’t give enough time to before. When the term “self care” comes up we usually thing about mental health or spiritual health-related activities…meditation, read a book, listen to music, etc but it’s just as important to care for our physical bodies. Even if you are of the mind that we are spiritual beings, we are still living in physical bodies.

What qualifies as physical self care can vary with different people, your current health status, and recommendations from your healthcare provider but here are some things to think about and consider:

  1. Drink some water - hydration is important and studies show that 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated! Dehydration can cause all sorts of issues like headaches and mood swings among others.

  2. Go for a walk - Depending on your health and ability even just a short walk can be beneficial to your health, boosting your immune system and easing joint pain along with other benefits!

  3. Improve your sleep hygiene - not everything needs to be difficult. Sleep is important to your body and sleep hygiene helps you get better sleep.

  4. Healthy Movement - Exercise can benefit not only your physical body but also your mental health as well! Even short bursts of 10 minutes can help reduce stress and boost your self esteem.

  5. Soak in the bath - Taking a bath can not only help us wash off the day, but can also help ease tension and help you fall asleep. For an extra boost, add some epsom salts to your bath for more skin and muscle benefits.

I’m not a health professional but I thought I’d help us all think a little about how we treat our physical bodies and remind us to take care of ourselves.
