You Probably aren’t grounded…What that means & what to do about it

Grounding is a term that can be talked about in a few ways in different groups of people. However, they are talking about different parts or aspects of the same thing.

Medical Community

Medical and psychological professionals speak about grounding as a way of calming someone from moments of panic, negative thoughts, or anxiety by paying close attention to their senses.

Natural Living Advocates

Promoters of natural living promote grounding as earthing, or coming in physical contact with the Earth or using products that are supposed to connect you with the electrical charge of the Earth.

Energy Healers

Exact definitions can vary a bit but generally being grounded is about being centered, in your body, and connected to the Earth’s energy.

Why is being grounded important?

When you aren’t grounded, there can be a number of side effects. Some possibilities include:

  • Feeling overwhelmed

  • Feeling spacey or easily distracted

  • Perpetual worry

  • Poor sleep

  • Overly stressed often

  • Being extra forgetful

How can you get grounded?

There are several techniques to get grounded, most seem rather simple but they can be very helpful and can be worked into your normal life flow.

Stop & Breathe

  1. Place your feet firmly on the ground/floor feeling your feet making contact with the ground.

  2. Take a deep breath in through your nose and exhale slowly out your mouth.

  3. Take 2 more deep breaths in the same way.

  4. Then look at an object in your immediate surroundings and (in your mind or out loud) describe it.

Open Your Hand Chakras

  1. Rub the palm of one hand with the thumb of the other

  2. Pull the energies up and off each finger

  3. Repeat for the other hand

Take a Walk

  • Taking a walk helps bring you back to your body. Bonus points if it’s where you can experience nature.

Boxed Breathing

  1. Breathe in while counting to 4

  2. Hold your breath for a count of 4

  3. Exhale while counting to 4

  4. Hold for a count of 4

  5. Repeat 4 times

  • Bonus points for tightening and releasing muscles as you breathe.

Lay Down and Feel

  1. Lie down (Bonus points for laying on the ground)

  2. Feel where your heady, body, and limbs are in contact with the surface you are laying on.

  3. Start at your head and notice how your body feels and continue doing so all the way to your feet.
